We spent a moment with Master bench jeweller, Sabine Roemer as she marks 30 years in the industry. Sabine is an award-winning designer, goldsmith and silversmith who, in addition to her own brands, has worked with the world's top jewellery fashion and couture houses. Sabine kindly shared her wisdom on what to consider when gifting jewellery or investing in precious stones.
What to look out for when buying diamonds or precious stones?
It depends I think what you are looking for in that stone? If it is an investment purpose the key is to focus on quality factors. For diamonds, remember the 4 Cs: carat, cut, clarity, and colour. A well-cut diamond will sparkle, and clarity impacts its brilliance. More on https://sabineroemer.com/diamonds-2/ For coloured gemstones, prioritise vibrant, even colour and good clarity, though some inclusions are acceptable. Always ask for certification from reputable labs like GIA, IGI or GUBLIN to verify authenticity. Also, inquire about treatments or enhancements, as these can affect value and care. Finally, knowing the gem's origin can add to its story and worth. But and there is a BIG BUT I do believe every person is drawn to certain colours, stones and a certain energy pulls you towards specific stones. And sometimes you just see a stone and it might be imperfect but this is exactly the stone you need. I personally love them all and I’m not drawn by only their value.
What are emerging trends in the jewellery world?
I’ve noticed that trends in gemstone shapes are constantly evolving, and right now, pear and heart cuts are particularly popular. When it comes to diamonds, coloured diamonds are seeing a remarkable rise in demand and value.
I’m also seeing a growing preference for high-value, understated jewellery that’s designed to be worn discreetly on a daily basis. Additionally, the niche of bespoke, personalised pieces is expanding, as it’s the personal stories behind these creations that truly connect us to the jewellery we wear.
What advice do you give to people looking to buy jewellery as a gift but also make a sound investment?
I always suggest choosing a piece that reflects the recipient’s personality and lifestyle. Think about what they’ll love and wear often—whether it’s something understated and practical or bold and eye-catching. Timeless designs in high-quality materials like certified diamonds, gold, or platinum are great for investment, but the piece should also feel personal and meaningful. When a gift resonates with their individuality, it becomes both sentimental and a lasting treasure.
Top 3 ‘always safe’ jewellery gift ideas when you are stuck?
I’d suggest starting with a diamond piece that can be stacked, like a simple diamond tennis bracelet, necklace or studs—it’s timeless, versatile, and can grow into part of a larger collection. Pieces made from durable materials like platinum or solid gold are always a great choice because they stand up to everyday wear and tear beautifully. Finally, adding a personal touch, like a design that tells a story or includes a talisman or symbol meaningful to the recipient, ensures the piece will be worn and cherished for years to come.
What city do you find the most romantic and why do you love visiting?
There are countless remarkable destinations, but I have a particular fondness for Rome. Perhaps it’s partially connected to my name, as it’s the German translation of Roman. Beyond that, I truly enjoy wandering through the city, admiring its historic architecture, and immersing myself in its unique way of life. The food is incredible, and the sunset over the Vatican, viewed from Castel Sant’Angelo, is an experience that feels truly special.
What is your favourite thing about being a jewellery designer and having a career in your industry?
What I love most is the ability to create pieces that hold deep meaning for people. Jewellery often marks significant moments, tells personal stories, and becomes a tangible part of a person’s life and culture. The industry itself is fascinating—it’s a bit like a Zeitzeuge, or contemporary witness, reflecting who we are as humans and the cultural influences of the time. Every piece I create is infused with love and passion, and I truly believe that this energy brings light into the new owner’s life. It’s like spreading light, one piece at a time, and that makes each design feel even more meaningful when it’s shared and cherished.
Describe your perfect Valentine's date.
My perfect Valentine’s date has definitely evolved over the years. In the past, it was all about single parties and spontaneous adventures, then it shifted to more romantic, intimate dates with my partner. But now, as a parent, it’s less about grand gestures and more about carving out time to reconnect with each other. We often look for quiet moments to remind ourselves of what we have, to cherish the love we share, and to appreciate the everyday things we sometimes take for granted. It’s the simplicity of just being together and have deep connections with each other.
What is on your travel / exhibition list for this year?
Currently, I am hosting a trunk show at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, showcasing a retrospective of my work and reflecting on my 30 years in the industry. I am also working on an exciting project set to launch in May in Italy, followed by a show in Miami later this year. Additionally, I am exploring new mediums and expanding my craft, with plans to delve into areas like architecture and marble cutting. It’s an exhilarating and ongoing journey of growth and discovery.
You travel a lot for work, what items do you always travel with?
I prefer to travel with only hand luggage whenever possible, which has inspired me to be more creative with my wardrobe. I enjoy recycling outfits and mixing and matching pieces to create fresh looks. I do always start of course by selecting the jewellery first, as it sets the tone for the entire outfit.
What are your non-negotiable daily rituals?
I always make sure to bring my own food and trusted supplements, as I prefer to avoid the discomfort of being hungry and struggling to find healthy options. Additionally, I prioritise incorporating daily activities into my routine, such as sports and breathing exercises, to maintain my well-being.
Where do you seek out inspiration for new collections or designs?
Everywhere I go and with everyone I meet, I am deeply attuned to the stories I hear, the building I see, what people wear and how they put things together . I absorb everything like a sponge, and at some point, all those experiences come together in ways I don’t always fully understand. I recall a moment in New York when I was walking with a friend on her daily route to the office and pointed out details she had never noticed. I have a strong visual sense, and everything I observe is stored, influencing my perspective and work in unexpected ways.
