Festive Safari: Christmas in the Bush

There is something so special about waking up on Christmas morning to the sounds of the bush. December brings green landscapes, young animals and long warm evenings.

Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa are where we would most like to spend it. Many of our favourite places are exclusive private homes with a dedicated team on hand to shape every day around you. From the youngest explorers to grandparents, there's something for everyone.

Early game drives, long lunches, lazy afternoons by the pool and dinners around the fire: what better way to spend the holidays than making memories with the people you love.

Safari is a Swahili word and Kenya remains one of the most varied places in Africa to experience it. From the cedar-clad highlands of Laikipia to the open grasslands of the Maasai Mara, December the perfect time to experience this wild landscape.

Kenya

The short rains have passed, the landscape is green, the air is clean and the plains are full of young animals. Beneath Mount Kenya, private conservancies offer horseback safaris and rhino tracking on food alongside classic game drives. While in the Mara, lion, leopard and cheetah roam the open savannah. With so much to do and space to spread out, it is a wonderful place to bring the whole family together.

Tanzania

From the open plains of the Serengeti to the baobab-studded wilderness of Ruaha, Tanzania is home to some of Africa's most celebrated safaris and December is a wonderful time to experience it.

As the short rains turn the landscape green, the great herds of wildebeest and zebra begin moving south towards the plains where they will give birth in the new year, with lion and leopard and cheetah never far behind.

In the remote south, Ruaha offers a wilder, quieter side of safari with very few camps, great herds of elephants and the chance to explore on foot.
