We spent a moment with Master bench jeweller, Sabine Roemer as she marks 30 years in the industry. Sabine is an award-winning designer, goldsmith and silversmith who, in addition to her own brands, has worked with the world's top jewellery fashion and couture houses. ‍What to look out for when buying diamonds or precious stones?‍

It depends I think what you are looking for in that stone? If it is an investment purpose the key is to focus on quality factors. For diamonds, remember the 4 C's: carat, cut, clarity, and colour. A well-cut diamond will sparkle, and clarity impacts its brilliance – more on my website here. For coloured gemstones, prioritise vibrant, even colour and good clarity, though some inclusions are acceptable. Always ask for certification from reputable labs like GIA, IGI or GUBLIN to verify authenticity. Also, inquire about treatments or enhancements, as these can affect value and care. Finally, knowing the gem's origin can add to its story and worth. But and there is a BIG BUT I do believe every person is drawn to certain colours, stones and a certain energy pulls you towards specific stones. And sometimes you just see a stone and it might be imperfect but this is exactly the stone you need. I personally love them all and I’m not drawn by only their value.

What are emerging trends in the jewellery world?‍

I’ve noticed that trends in gemstone shapes are constantly evolving, and right now, pear and heart cuts are particularly popular. When it comes to diamonds, coloured diamonds are seeing a remarkable rise in demand and value.
I’m also seeing a growing preference for high-value, understated jewellery that’s designed to be worn discreetly on a daily basis. Additionally, the niche of bespoke, personalised pieces is expanding, as it’s the personal stories behind these creations that truly connect us to the jewellery we wear.

‍What advice do you give to people looking to buy jewellery as a gift but also make a sound investment? ‍

I always suggest choosing a piece that reflects the recipient’s personality and lifestyle. Think about what they’ll love and wear often—whether it’s something understated and practical or bold and eye-catching. Timeless designs in high-quality materials like certified diamonds, gold, or platinum are great for investment, but the piece should also feel personal and meaningful. When a gift resonates with their individuality, it becomes both sentimental and a lasting treasure.

What city do you find the most romantic and why do you love visiting?‍

There are countless remarkable destinations, but I have a particular fondness for Rome. Perhaps it’s partially connected to my name, as it’s the German translation of Roman. Beyond that, I truly enjoy wandering through the city, admiring its historic architecture, and immersing myself in its unique way of life. The food is incredible, and the sunset over the Vatican, viewed from Castel Sant’Angelo, is an experience that feels truly special.
